GENERAL RISK ASSESSOR

COMPETENCY COURSE

Modern safety legislation has moved away from a prescriptive form of mass of detailed regulations.

The drive is now towards placing the responsibility for determining safety and health requirements firmly on the shoulders of organisational management.

This is certainly the case in the marine environment where the relatively new

Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Health and Safety at Work) Regulations 1997
The Associated Health and Safety at Sea; Code of Practice
The International Safety Management (ISM) Code

all demand the production of effective risk assessment and control procedures.

This Two-day course covers: -

Day One. Theory of Safety, Health and Environmental Risk Assessment.

  • Definitions of Hazard, Risk, Incident and Accident
  • Identification of Hazards:
         Workplace
         Work Activities
  • Assessment of Risk:
         Likelihood of incident
         Severity of Accident
  • Hierarchy of Controls
  • Documentation and Records
  • Monitoring
  • Inspection
  • Audits.
  • Reviews

Day Two. A Practical application of the theory of day one

Workplace visit:

  • Identification of Workplace Hazards
  • Identification of Work Activity Hazards
  • Identification of Environmental Hazards
  • Assessing the Risks of identified Hazards
  • Determining Controls for the Assessed Risks
  • Completing Documentation and Records

Writing Management Reports.

Participants who produce an acceptable risk assessment and associated report to management recommending controls will receive the "General Risk Assessor's Competency Certificate" issued through the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). United Kingdom

RISK ASSESSMENT AND REPORT

The objective of this is for participants to apply some of the techniques and principles they have learned in the course. On completion of the project they should have gained some practical experience in risk management and control. They will also be able to structure and present managerial report describing the activities they undertook, their rationale and the conclusions and recommendations they have arrived at.

A typical report will contain:

INTRODUCTION     What is to be assessed and why it was selected

METHOD.                 What was done and how it was done.

CONCLUSIONS.    What was discovered. Was it what was expected?

What went well and proved to be difficult.

RECOMMENDATIONS. What should be done to improve risk controls.
