AIM
To ensure that participants are fully knowledgeable
as to the duties and role of the Shipboard Safety Officer

OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the course participants will be able to : 

  • Understand basic Health & Safety legislation

  • Be conversant with the IMO Ship Management Code

  • Comprehend the duties of the Shipboard Safety Officer

  • Influence behaviour towards improving safety performance

  • Be able to mount a safety awareness campaign

  • Know how to perform simple risk assessment

  • Have the knowledge to conduct effective safety inspections

  • Be capable to conduct effective accident investigations


Day 1 SAFETY MANAGEMENT

  • Background to Health & Safety Management

  • Managerial roles and responsibilities

  • Specific duties of the Shipboard Safety Officer

  • Communicating the safety message
  • Influencing attitudes and behaviour

  • Managing change in a safety context


Day 2 PRACTICAL SAFETY

presented by Mr. Michael Snowling BA. C.Eng. MIOSH RSP
   


  • Hazard identification and classification

  • Risk Assessment

  • Risk Control

  • Monitoring for compliance - inspections and audits

  • Accident investigation

  • Open forum, course review and certification.


Day 3 LEGAL FRAMEWORK

  • Basic knowledge of the English legal system

  • Requirements of the Company’s Safety Policy

  • Merchant Shipping Notices and Statutory Instruments

  • Regulations regarding Health & Safety at Sea

  • ISM Code of Ship Management
